Introducing: Inglês, sua chave para à pronúncia correta, written by Anthony August Larson. Published and registered in the Rio de Janeiro Library of Congress in 2009.
What happens when someone with access to one of the world’s most funded, researched, and developed system for training people applies this methodology to teaching English to Brazilians? The answer is change!
Hi, I’m Tony Larson, and not too long ago I was in a similar position as you may be. But instead of being a Brazilian wanting to speak English, I was a North American wanting to learn Portuguese. At the time my work in the United States Marine Corps took me to various countries, where I frequently enjoyed the company of Brazilians who were living or travelling abroad. I had never met such lively, spontaneous people! Enchanted by the exotic sounds and rhythms when they spoke amongst themselves, I became determined to learn Portuguese. I had tried books and tapes from USA, Brazil, and even one from Portugal. But nothing worked for me. When I recalled how my former company’s training system had been so simple and effective, I decided to try applying these principles to my own Portuguese training. Did it work? Well, after eight months of teaching myself with these methods for three to four hours a week, I was granted an official fluency rating in Portuguese from the University of Washington! The professor who corrected my course placement exam thought that I had taken advanced courses or lived in Brazil or Portugal! And although it was nice getting complimented on my Portuguese everywhere we went, the best part was simply being able to communicate so naturally on my trip to Brazil! So how is something remarkable like this possible for someone like myself? I have to confess, I simply combined the proven training techniques from my previous position with Portuguese words and sounds, and the learning part was inevitable.
You see, my previous vocation was as a trainer for the same organization who’s research and development department brought us the x-ray, the microwave oven, and even the internet! That’s right, the United States military. Millions of government dollars are spent monthly to train their students, whose application of learned material is vital to national security. Teams of psychologists, scientists, and experts continually analyze and improve upon their sophisticated instructional methods. Powerful psychological tools such as visualization and vocal affirmation mentally prepare students to learn and retain information before new material is taught. It’s similar to washing that layer of dirt off your car before you put the wax on, or fertilizing the farm before you plant. First preexisting mental inhibitors such as lack of focus, unproductive thought patterns, and even anxiety are corrected. Then instructors are positioned to motivate and instruct in a way that sticks! And that is what we (you and I) do for you in this book. First we build for you, in a logical, easy to understand sequence, the psychological foundation for effective learning. Then we explore YOUR systematic and practical approach to learning English.
What beginners can expect from this book
If you read this book with an open mind, participate in all the exercises, and follow the instructions, you can expect to develop a strong understanding of how English really works and is pronounced. You will be able to travel, greet people, book a room in a hotel over the phone, order food at restaurants, and ask people to clarify when you do not understand. Assuming you follow through, you will benefit from this system as others have. And you will have the option to continue your English advancement with this same learning system through other books and resources available.
What advanced and intermediate English speakers can expect
Any book can teach you rules and verbs, but this is the only tool available that will help you lose your accent! Even if you already speak English at an advanced level, you can still expect to greatly improve upon your pronunciation. Once you incorporate this system into the way you speak and learn English, you will understand how to help yourself pronounce any English word correctly. There will be no more mysteries, and you will speak with more pride and confidence.
I dedicate this work to you, the Brazilian people, who have blessed me in so many ways. It was inspiration that overflows from interaction with you people that created my desire to learn Portuguese. And of course to the individuals who originally helped me plug the Portuguese words and sounds into this learning system, thank you. This book, which results from 14 years of research and practical application, is my chance to give back to you all.
